Federal prosecutors in Manhattan told a federal judge Tuesday night that Michael Avenatti had been arrested for violating the terms of his pretrial release in Los Angeles, where he is charged with embezzling money from his clients.

The revelation, outlined in a one-page letter to Judge Paul G. Gardephe of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, came just one week before the former lawyer for adult film star Stormy Daniels and outspoken critic of President Donald Trump is set to stand trial in New York in a separate case accusing him of trying to extort between $15 and $25 million from Nike Inc.

It was not immediately clear how the arrest would impact the proceedings in New York, where attorneys were scheduled to meet for a pretrial conference on Friday.

In the letter, U.S. attorney Geoffrey Berman said that prosecutors in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California informed his office late this afternoon that they had requested an arrest warrant related to "several potential violations" of Avenatti's release in that district.

"A few minutes ago, the government was advised by the USAO-CDCA that an arrest warrant had been issued, and that it expected the defendant to be arrested soon. We understand that that has now occurred," Berman said in the letter, which was filed just before 9:30 p.m. "We are still gathering information and will provide an update to the court as soon as we can."

Avenatti has pleaded not guilty in both cases and vowed to fight the charges. His attorney, Scott Srebnick, could not immediately be reached for comment.
