After more than 50 years on the federal bench, U.S. Senior District Judge Jack Weinstein of the Eastern District of New York moved to inactive status Monday by turning over his remaining cases to colleagues in the Eastern District of New York.

Weinstein, 98, was believed to be the final active judge appointed by President Lyndon Johnson. Former colleagues praised him Thursday as creative, endlessly hardworking and deeply committed to justice.
