A group of state lawmakers want to add clarity to the state’s price gouging standard in an effort to stop businesses from taking advantage of the novel coronavirus emergency to jack up prices on hand sanitizer, over-the-counter medications and other medical products.

The legislation would define the price gouging threshold on consumer medical supplies as a 10% increase during a public health crisis. It would also allow state Attorney General Letitia James to seek civil penalties of up to $25,000 if sellers violate the bill.
