As coronavirus continues to sweep through the New York judiciary, Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Ellen Spodek has been named acting administrative judge for civil matters in Kings County, a spokesman for the state court system confirmed Monday.

Spodek is filling in while Administrative Judge Lawrence Knipel is in the hospital with COVID-19, spokesman Lucian Chalfen said.

Knipel's wife, attorney Lori Citron Knipel, told the New York Daily News that her husband was awake and alert. He was hospitalized March 31 and is not on a ventilator, the Daily News reported. Citron Knipel did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.

Knipel has served as administrative judge since 2013. He continues to hear commercial matters as he supervises the court's overall handling of civil matters.

"He has implemented many innovative programs to streamline court procedures and increase efficiency, including the inauguration of the nation's largest and most comprehensive central pre-trial discovery complex," according to the biography on the Unified Court System website.

He has resolved matters under the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act, toxic tort, employment discrimination and medical malpractice cases, the biography said.

Spodek was elected to the civil term of Brooklyn Supreme Court in 2009 and previously served as supervising judge of Brooklyn Civil Court. She was installed as president of the Brooklyn Brandeis Society in 2019. A 1988 graduate of the Fordham University School of Law, she served on the New York City Civil Court for Kings County from 2003 to 2008.

At least 15 judges statewide have become sick with coronavirus, Chalfen said. Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Johnny Lee Baynes died of complications from the virus on March 26.
