I've been a lawyer now for 40 years and the law has been good to me and I have been good to it. My son just completed his 2nd year at Brooklyn Law and it dawns on me whether he and all other law school students and grads will find gainful employment given that the pandemic has and seemingly will if not decimate the legal field, certainly will put a damper on jobs and positions. Yes we older folk provide guidance and teaching to younger associates. And yes many of us are in good health, both physically and mentally. So why should we give up our careers when these factors are apparent? Law schools continue to put out thousands of grads each year. Many will have significant difficulties finding employment in both the private and public sector. The rule of law is being attacked by politicians on both sides every day. Lawyers, young ones, are needed to keep the law flourishing and steady. Many of us may not want to retire giving up lucrative salaries and life style. But if we want the law to continue to guide the country and the world and want future generations to take the mantle, then maybe it's time for us older lawyers to consider giving up our jobs and positions so that our children and future generations can take over.
