People entering New York, New Jersey and Connecticut from states with high coronavirus infection rates must quarantine for 14 days, the governors of the three Northeastern states said Wednesday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who characterized it as a "joint travel advisory," said it will apply to people traveling from states that exceed a certain coronavirus infection rate. Florida, Texas and North Carolina were among the states that are above the infection level as of Wednesday, Cuomo reported.

Enforcement of the policy will be left to the individual states, he said, mentioning that people who violate quarantine can face a "judicial order and mandatory quarantine." There are fines that could come with violating the quarantine, he said.

"It's only for the simple reason that we worked very hard to get the viral transmission rate down," Cuomo said of the announcement. "We don't want to see it go up because a lot of people come into this region and they could literally bring the infection with them."

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont joined Cuomo via video Wednesday to make the announcement.

Murphy described the move as common sense and said the last thing officials should do is subject the region to another round of coronavirus cases.

"This is a smart thing to do," he said.
