Seth D. DuCharme was appointed and sworn in as acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York Friday.
Chief Judge Roslynn Mauskopf of the Eastern District of New York swore in DuCharme, whose appointment was announced the same day by U.S. Attorney General William Barr.
DuCharme fills the vacancy created by former U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue, who announced July 2 that he had accepted a job with the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.
DuCharme was chief of the Eastern District's criminal division before he moved to Washington to become Barr's counselor in early 2019. In December, he became principal associate deputy attorney general, which is the role Donoghue will take on in Washington.
The principal associate deputy attorney general helps coordinate the department's work with U.S. Attorney's Offices around the country and is the top deputy to Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen.
DuCharme, a former associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and veteran of the U.S. Marshals Service, previously served as the Eastern District's chief of national security and cybercrime.
"Seth has served the Department with distinction during his time at Main Justice," Barr said in a statement. "He is a talented and experienced prosecutor who manages with a steady hand. His experience in prosecuting violent crime, terrorism, and public corruption, will serve him well in his return to New York to lead the office. The Deputy Attorney General and I look forward to working with him in his new role."
In his own statement, DuCharme wished Donoghue "great success" in Washington.
"I am deeply honored to return to my home in the Eastern District of New York to serve as the Acting United States Attorney," DuCharme said. "Applying all of my experience over the many years living here and working alongside some of the most outstanding people in the Department of Justice, I am firmly committed to serving our community and our country to the highest standards and in the finest tradition of this Office."
DuCharme graduated from Fordham University School of Law in 2003 and from Hamilton College in 1992.
The Eastern District's first assistant U.S. attorney, Mark Lesko, will remain in his present role, according to a news release.
