The Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Thursday that Gustavo Vila, a disbarred Westchester County attorney, has been charged with stealing $1 million from a retired New York City police officer, who had been awarded the money through the Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund.

According to the criminal complaint, unsealed Thursday in White Plains federal court, Vila filed a claim on behalf of his client, but never told him that the payment came through in October 2016. Vila later used the funds, prosecutors alleged, on personal expenses, including to pay his own taxes.
