New York’s prison system is facing its largest coronavirus outbreak so far at a Southern Tier facility, where hundreds of inmates have been infected and cases have soared upward in recent days.

Elmira Correctional Facility witnessed a more than fivefold surge in prisoner coronavirus cases over a 96-hour period from Oct. 19 to 23 last week, according to the most recent figures from the state prison agency.
