In a political battle between two lawyers, Republican challenger Ed Smyth holds a lead in in-person ballots over incumbent Democrat James Gaughran in a key state Senate seat on Long Island.

The contest is one in a string of critical state Senate races statewide in which Republicans held sizable leads Thursday among in-person ballots, according to unofficial tallies from state election officials.
