The Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office said that throughout the course of his representation, Vila claimed to be an attorney, even though he had been disbarred in 2015 after pleading guilty to stealing tens of thousands of dollars from another client.

Gustavo Vila, a disbarred Westchester County attorney, has been sentenced to more than four years in prison for stealing $1 million from a retired New York City police officer who had been awarded the money through the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.
