The City of New York on Thursday sued three major oil companies and the American Petroleum Institute in Manhattan Supreme Court, arguing that they engaged in deceptive trade practices to "greenwash" and mislead local consumers about the environmental costs of fossil fuel products.

The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M.
