An Albany County Court judge resigned and agreed not to seek judicial office in the future after the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct informed him that it was investigating a complaint against him, the commission announced Friday.

Judge William A. Carter has denied the allegation that he sought to have a friend’s pistol permit application assigned to himself and spoke about the matter with the judge to whom the application was assigned, according to the commission’s records.
