The first COVID-19 vaccination mandate has finally arrived in the United States. On Aug. 16, 2021, Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City issued an executive order banning unvaccinated individuals from all indoor restaurants, gyms, and entertainment venues. “This is going to be a requirement,” de Blasio explained. “The only way to patronize these establishments indoors will be if you’re vaccinated.”

It didn’t take long for a group of businesses from Staten Island to respond by filing a lawsuit in the Supreme Court of New York. The action, submitted by the Independent Restaurant Owners Association Rescue (IROAR), seeks a permanent injunction against the executive order, arguing that the mandate would severely impact their businesses, life savings, and livelihoods.
