Criminal justice reform advocates on Friday praised New York Gov. Kathy Hochul for signing the Less Is More Act, which reduces the likelihood that technical parole violations will lead to reincarceration of people on community supervision.

The new law is set to take effect in 2022, but Hochul also announced that state and New York City officials will work to immediately release up to 191 people from Rikers Island jail complex who do not qualify for incarceration under the “spirit” of the bill.
