The Office of the Appellate Defender (OAD) will host its 28th annual "First Monday in October" gala and mock Supreme Court argument tonight, Oct. 4. The event will be held in person at Tribeca 360° and will also be livestreamed.

This year, Benjamin Brafman of Brafman & Associates, and Neal Katyal of Hogan Lovells will present arguments in NYSRPA v. Bruen, the first SCOTUS case to address concealed-carry firearms outside the home. They will each receive OAD's prestigious Gould Award for Outstanding Oral Advocacy.

Jennifer Newstead, chief legal officer of Facebook, will serve as chief justice of the mock court and will receive the OAD Counsel for Justice Award for her exemplary commitment to the public interest throughout her career.
