On Tuesday, October 26, the court system held a dedication for the Honorable Betty Weinberg Ellerin Children's Center at the courthouse at 111 Centre St. in lower Manhattan. The children's center is named for the trailblazing judge whose seven-decade career includes a number of historic firsts: she was the first woman to become a law clerk in New York's state courts and the first to become presiding justice of the Manhattan-based Appellate Division, First Department, to name a few.

"As the courts steadily return to in-person operations, the Betty Weinberg Ellerin Children's Center will be a safe place where parents and caregivers appearing in the New York City Family, Criminal and Housing Courts can leave their children—offering a nurturing, literacy-rich environment for vulnerable children and an opportunity to connect families with vital healthcare and other support services," the court system said in a news release.

The center is funded with a $966,865 grant from Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.'s office.

Weinberg Ellerin chairs the New York State Judicial Committee on Women in the Courts and is senior counsel at Alston & Bird.
