Even before New York Attorney General Letitia James’ October announcement that she would run for governor, challengers had already begun to line up to face her next year if she decided to seek a second term.

But by Thursday, when she announced that she is withdrawing from the gubernatorial race and instead seeking a second term, the field of challengers had ballooned to five Democrats and three Republicans, according to the latest filings with the state Board of Elections. Following James’ announcement that she would instead defend her seat, State Sen. Shelley Mayer, a Democrat who represents portions of Westchester Country, dropped out.
