The COVID-19 positivity rate inside Rikers Island and other city jails has leaped from 1% to 17% in just 10 days, said Commissioner Vincent Schiraldi. He advocated for supervised release of inmates in more cases, possible modifications to sentence lengths, and requests for compassionate release of inmates.

New York City Department of Correction Commissioner Vincent Schiraldi has made a plea for defender organizations and prosecutors, and, in effect, the courts, to use "every available option" to reduce the city's jail population as the COVID-19 positivity rate inside the jails has leaped from 1% to 17% in just 10 days.
