Weil, Gotshal & Manges filed a civil rights lawsuit against the State of New York Tuesday in New York Southern District Court. The complaint was brought on behalf of Upsolve Inc., an organization that provides free legal services to help those in debt or filing for bankruptcy, and South Bronx pastor Rev. John Udo-Okon,

The plaintiffs contend that there are still many New York residents without access to civil legal assistance, resulting in property seizures or other major consequences. Thus, New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office should refrain from enforcing unauthorized practice of law rules against the nonprofit.
