Brian Flores, the ex-head coach for the Miami Dolphins, alleges in a class-action suit filed on the first day of Black History Month that the New York Giants’ decision to hire a white candidate instead of him stems from a long history of racial discrimination in the NFL.

In a complaint filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Flores notes that while approximately 70% of professional football players are Black, only one of the NFL’s 32 teams currently has a Black head coach and no teams have a Black owner—a scenario in which the league is “managed much like a plantation,” Flores charges.
