New York Chief Judge Janet DiFiore on Monday announced that the rest of New York’s trial courts will reduce their social distancing requirement to three feet from six, one month after criminal courts made the same change.

DiFiore said the “very encouraging” trend in New York’s declining COVID-19 positivity rates led the court system to relax the distancing rules, which will allow more in-person trials and other proceedings to take place as court officials seek to move through pandemic-related backlogs.
