In newly-minted Associate Judge Shirley Troutman’s first signed ruling for the New York Court of Appeals, the judges unanimously denied a new trial for a defendant who said he was deprived of his right to counsel because he didn’t know his attorney was suspended by another court.

In May 2015, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit suspended attorney Andres Aranda for 18 months for what it called a “pattern of misconduct” involving seven cases before the court, including making defaults that resulted in the dismissal of appeals that were ultimately reinstated, filing defective documents and failing to correct errors when confronted about them
