In 2021 the Cayuga Nation sued to enforce its sovereign rights against the Seneca-Cayuga Nation of Oklahoma (SCN), claiming that its sovereign rights were violated SCN members’ sale of untaxed native-brand cigarettes at a retail Pipekeepers Smoke Shop on the Cayuga Reservation.

The Cayuga Nation and SCN later advised the court of settlement, involving SCN’s sale of the subject property to the Cayuga Nation. District court denied the Justice for Native First People LLC (JNFP) motion to intervene under FRCP 24(a), on claims it was Pipekeepers’ actual tenant and had sub-let the shop to members of the Cayuga Nation.
