BMG Monroe I LLC, developer of the Smith Farm Project subdivision, sued the Village of Monroe in the Southern District of New York under 42 USC §1983 and the Fair Housing Act, claiming that, motivated by religious discrimination, the Village obstructed, frustrated, and delayed completion of the project to prevent a Hasidic Jewish community from seeking housing in the Village.

In addition to denying building permits by misinterpreting the terms of the project’s approval documents, the Village allegedly enacted local laws targeting BMG and the Hasidic Jewish community.
