Gov. Kathy Hochul would be wise to screen and appoint a seasoned successor with “gravitas” to replace former Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin, says the attorney who set legal precedent for a New York governor to pick a second-in-command 13 years ago.

Even so, says attorney Peter Kiernan, senior counsel for Venable LLC, Hochul’s actions might be dismissed as “a second cynical political maneuver.”
