A longtime New York lawyer has been disbarred after committing a felony that involved a nearly $2.2 million illegal kickback from another lawyer and a central role in a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power bribery scandal.

The decision from the Appellate Division, First Department to disbar veteran Manhattan business litigator and class-action attorney Paul Paradis also laid out how last November Paradis asked the First Department court to approve his non-disciplinary resignation. At that time, he explained to the New York appellate court that he’d been diagnosed with a brain tumor and did not feel he could practice law anymore.
