A disbarred attorney was sentenced to three years in prison in Manhattan federal court Thursday for defrauding investors through his litigation finance company "Cash4Cases."

Jaeson Birnbaum, 48, pleaded guilty to securities fraud in 2021 after he was accused of obtaining more than $3 million in investments based on misrepresentations. He was ordered to pay $2,661,072.24 in restitution and to forfeit the same amount in addition to the prison sentence.

Cash4Cases relied on a business model that involved buying the rights to the prospective recoveries from lawsuits, including personal injury and medical malpractice suits, prosecutors said.
