Julian Friedman, part of the vanguard for the New York City white-collar defense bar of today, died on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 78.

Reared in Teaneck, New Jersey, Friedman completed his undergraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1969, he obtained his law degree from Columbia Law School. Friedman landed a job with Botein, Hays, Sklar & Herzberg, where he struck up a friendship with Charles Stillman, then a young partner at the firm, that ended up lasting a lifetime.
