One could almost count on one hand the number of Extreme Risk Protection Orders filed within a 16-month span prior to Erie County becoming the epicenter of the issue, by way of an apparent racially motivated mass shooting in a Buffalo grocery store resulting in 10 deaths.

During all of 2021 there were four orders filed, and from Jan. 1 through May 13 of this year there were two, Erie County District Attorney John Flynn said Tuesday.
