In his opening statement Wednesday, Willkie Farr & Gallagher partner Michael Schachter told a Brooklyn federal jury that his client, former Trump inaugural committee chairman Thomas Barrack, was not directed by the United Arab Emirates when he spoke about Middle East affairs on television and in conversations with the Trump administration.

“You are going to see he did things because he wanted to and because it was the right thing to do for his business, for his work, for his shareholders and for America,” Schachter said.
