Last year, for its annual New York Legal Awards, the Law Journal gave much-deserved praise to many in the legal community for steering the practice of law through a global pandemic—and in some ways making it stronger than it was before. A year later, firms are grappling with a different set of challenges. Some of these challenges were of course already in the works before 2020, but some have just recently come to the fore. Firms are dealing with the fallout from the so-called Great Resignation. They see a white-hot lateral market beginning to cool. Fears of an impending economic recession is quieting a once-chaotic market. And, in many corners, the hybrid workplace looks like it's here to stay (much to the chagrin of some firm leaders). But what remains unchanged is the commitment to excellence in practicing law that is common among those honored in the New York Legal Awards, whose tireless efforts to elevate the profession have attracted the admiration of colleagues, contemporaries and even opposing counsel. This year's award presentation, which drew more than 400 attendees, was held on Oct. 6 at the Marriot Marquis in Times Square. There the Law Journal named Jenner & Block's Susan Kohlmann, and president of the New York City Bar Association, the Attorney of the Year.
