The New York Court of Appeals heard arguments on Wednesday about a physical altercation over a $20 debt that escalated to a man seriously injuring a small dog when he struck it with a broken broomstick.

The man, Luis Jimenez, said he was justified in the 2018 incident in Queens because he was being held by a family member of his combatant who had armed himself with metal rods and threatened to take his life.
