A surge in red flag protective orders since the summer suggests that the strengthened law is working, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in an announcement of additional funding.

The attorney general’s fiscal 2023 budget will be infused with an additional $4.6 million to support state police in making requests to remove guns from people who have been deemed too dangerous to possess or buy firearms, Hochul and AG Letitia James told reporters in Albany on Monday.

Their update comes five months after Hochul signed an executive order that beefed up Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) applications by state police, and, as noted by the press, is well-timed with the Nov. 8 general election in two weeks.

Also, some recent polls have U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-New York, gaining ground in the race for governor.

Some media saw the presser as a response to Zeldin’s criticism of Hochul’s public-safety record, but Hochul said she refused to let “political theater out there affect what we’ve done.”
