A landmark settlement through which the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo agreed to subject itself to independent oversight concerning allegations of child sexual abuse by clergy drew a wealth of opinions from legal advocates in New York.

Attorney General Letitia James on Tuesday resolved a November 2020 lawsuit that alleged the diocese of the state’s second-largest city failed to address a child sexual abuse crisis and protected accused priests by quietly removing them from the ministry through false claims of medical leaves or voluntary retirements.
