A blue-ribbon committee tasked with recommending to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul seven attorneys for the next chief judge of New York revealed its picks late Wednesday, two days before its statutory deadline.

They are New York Court of Appeals Acting Chief Judge Anthony Cannataro; Abbe Gluck, the Alfred M. Rankin Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the Solomon Center for Health Law and Policy at the Yale Law School; appellate level Judges Hector LaSalle and Jeffrey Oing, of the second and first departments, respectively, with LaSalle a presiding justice; Albany Law School President and Dean Alicia Ouellette; Edwina Richardson-Mendelson, deputy chief administrative judge for Justice Initiatives; and Corey Stoughton, attorney-in-charge of special litigation and law reform at the Legal Aid Society.

State Sen. Brad Hoylman, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said in a statement: "I'm happy that it appears the Commission on Judicial Nomination has answered the call by elected officials and judicial advocates to select a diverse list of candidates."

Hoylman, D-Manhattan, thanked the commissioners for presenting Hochul "a robust selection," and the candidates "for putting themselves forward and modeling the very best of the legal profession."

The candidates, whittled from 41 applicants, were evaluated on their character, temperament, professional aptitude, experience, qualifications and fitness for office, Commission on Judicial Nomination Chairman E. Leo Milonas said in his letter to Hochul.

Twenty-two of the applicants were women and 17 were of diverse backgrounds.
