Albany Law School Dean and President Alicia Ouellette, one of two academics on the short list submitted to Gov. Kathy Hochul for New York’s next chief judge, has shown through eight years at the institution’s top spot that she knows how to steer a large institution. 

But Ouellette’s curriculum vitae also includes years of experience briefing and arguing cases on behalf of the state government before the New York Court of Appeals, state midlevel appellate courts and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in an array of practice areas, including criminal law, education and public benefits.
