Of the seven people on the shortlist to serve as New York's next chief judge, only Judge Anthony Cannataro is already a member of the state's highest court.
Since August, Cannataro has also served as acting chief judge, essentially a rehearsal for the role he would fill if appointed by Gov. Kathy Hochul and confirmed by the state Senate.
