Gov. Kathy Hochul’s selection of a chief judge of New York by Dec. 23 will require navigating political crosswinds.

The Democratic-controlled Senate is charged with confirming the pick, and its second-highest ranking leader suggested there could be pushback if the governor selects Acting Chief Judge Cannataro, who’s considered part of the court’s moderate-conservative bloc that had formed under recently retired Chief Judge Janet DiFiore.
