Gov. Kathy Hochul will soon be selecting a new Chief Judge to lead the Court of Appeals, the highest court in New York. Hochul’s decision will not only have a profound impact on the future of New York’s court system, but also the lives of all New Yorkers who rely upon a functioning justice system to address a wide range of issues including housing, criminal justice and public safety, civil rights, voting rights and business disputes.

Based on the criteria set forth in her Nov. 23 op-ed, Hochul promised to select a chief judge who could (1) help unite the existing court on the issues and rights most important and impactful to New Yorkers; and (2) effectively manage the diverse and complex courts across the state to ensure fairness and justice for all litigants, criminal defendants, as well as victims of crime.
