The head of a western New York appeals court whose legal career began in a law firm that bred several future judges is in the running to take the middle bench seat on New York’s highest court.

Appellate Division, Fourth Department Presiding Justice Gerald J. Whalen is one of seven candidates the Commission on Judicial Nomination deemed worthy of the governor’s nod for chief judge of the Court of Appeals.
