As acting chief judge, Cannataro is already the first openly gay person to lead the state judiciary-- a distinction he has held since being put in the role last August. He would make history if appointed and confirmed to the post on a permanent basis.

Of the seven people on the shortlist to serve as New York's next chief judge, only Judge Anthony Cannataro has had a dress rehearsal for the role.
Since August, Cannataro has served as acting chief judge, leading the court system on an interim basis while continuing to sit on the Court of Appeals, where he has been an associate judge since 2021.
