When, during World War II, Russian dictator Josef Stalin and Foreign Affairs Minister Vyacheslav Molotov inquired of Prime Minister Pierre Laval about the strength of French troops on the Western Front, Laval asked in return whether they could do something to encourage religion and the Catholics of Russia as it would help him vis-à-vis the pope.

Stalin famously replied: “The pope? How many divisions has he got?”
