In 1991 22-year-old Robert Kordish—on probation for a prior conviction for the same offense—was charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance after selling cocaine to Undercover Police Officer 31365.

The courtroom was closed when UC 31365 and “ghost” Undercover Police Officer 2780, whose role was to protect UC 31365, testified. Kordish was convicted and sentenced in absentia as a second felony offender to an indeterminate term of 8 to 16 years in prison. The Appellate Division affirmed conviction, but reduced sentence to 5 to 10 years in prison.
