The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the benefits of remote hearings for the courts, attorneys, and defendants. But as online legal proceedings increasingly become more common, security concerns are also rising.

About 80% of the largest 100 law firms have experienced some sort of cybersecurity violation. The majority of these attacks have targeted personal identification information about clients. Indeed, according to public data, in 2020, law firm attacks compromised information on 46,000 persons, but in 2021, that number skyrocketed to nearly 750,000. Because court hearings are not always on the public record, it is imperative for any virtual/remote participants to feel secure that their confidentiality has been protected from unauthorized access, interception, or alteration.
