On June 14, the European Parliament approved the Artificial Intelligence Act (the E.U. AI Act), a sweeping regulatory framework on par with the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that creates guidelines and prohibitions concerning the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The E.U. AI Act now proceeds to the so-called "trilogue" process, an informal negotiation involving members of the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission.  The trilogue process can take months, however, and the E.U. AI Act has been under consideration since it was first proposed in April 2021.

The E.U. AI Act is expected to be a signal development in the regulation of AI, applying not only to providers of AI solutions, but also to users of AI systems located within the E.U. and "providers and users of AI systems that are located in a third country, where the output produced by the system is used in the Union."  See E.U. AI Act Art. II §1(c).
