U.S. citizen Ashraf Omar Eldarir often travels to Egypt and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security probed his sales of Egyptian antiques of suspicious provenance.
On Jan. 22, 2020, he was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport on suspicion of transporting Egyptian artifacts, after a border search by U.S. Customs and Border Enforcement that included a warrantless search of his iPhone, and recovery of 590 alleged artifacts and blank paper resembling purported provenances.
