Hikma Pharmaceuticals has filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit against insurance company Lloyd's of London, claiming its insurers have failed to honor their product liability insurance and indemnify Hikma as it battles multidistrict litigation relating to its opioid products.

The complaint, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, alleges that Lloyd's and its subsidiaries have abandoned Hikma as it battles some 900 opioid-related lawsuits variously alleging its products were defective, dangerous, and caused illness, addiction and death.

The insurers' abandonment of their duties to defend and pay Hikma's defense costs and other obligations has required Hikma to mount a defense of these lawsuits "unaided by the 'litigation insurance' they purchased and undertake settlements at its own cost," the Sept. 12 filing states.
