The wildfire death toll is presently at 97 victims in Maui, Hawaii. Meanwhile, approximately 66 others remain missing. The fires have impacted roughly 2,170 acres. With such immeasurable losses, here is what we know about the tragic blaze over two months later.
The Fire Likely Started Around 11 p.m. on Aug. 7, 2023
The first evidence of the fire is a video from the Maui Bird Conservation Center, date and time stamped starting at "08/07/23 Mon 22:47:46." The Hawaii Department of Natural Land Resources posted the video to its Instagram account "hawaiidlnr" on Aug. 11. The video opens with a camera pointed down to the left, to a dark forest, with leaves and branches blowing in the wind. There is a bright flash, then the camera angle shifts upwards and to the right. There is a five second pause in the video. The camera angles back down and to the left, and there is suddenly fire burning where merely five seconds prior, there had been only pitch-black forest.
