Jelani Jefferson Exum, dean of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, will become the 10th dean of St. John’s University School of Law, the first Black dean and second woman to lead the school since it opened in 1925.

Exum, who also serves as the school’s Philip J. McElroy professor of law at Detroit Mercy Law, will begin her deanship at St. John’s Law on June 1, Michael Simons, outgoing dean and John V. Brennan professor of law and ethics at St. John’s Law, wrote in a letter to the school’s alumni on Monday.
